A classy brewing company
Appearance: amber, brown, short lasting fizzy head.
Nose: tea and honey, banana, mild cocoa and coffee
taste: sour, bitter cocoa, but cocoa extremely subtle - tastes like very very dark chocolate but only with the bitterness, and without the well rounded warm darkness and other qualities that true dark chocolate has. There is almost a curry flavor at the back of the mouth when you exhale.
Very thin, watery mouth feel; low carbonation.
COR: 0-5 (D said he wouldn't refuse it, but we won't buy it again, but see notes below)
Color/degrees Lovibond (EBC) 41
Bitterness (IBUs) 24
Original Gravity (Plato) 20
ABV 9.1%
Turns out this beer is from an infected batch. I give credit to the Boulevard Brewing Company for owning up to this. Lots of other American Brewing Companies put out massive loads of skunk, and don't offer refunds. Although safe to drink, the flavors and aromas detected in this Chocolate Ale were likely not intended. That being said, I am intrigued to taste a non-infected batch, supposedly it is super chocolatey.
Read this fascinating article about spotting a bad beer. The infection is an unintended yeast (see previous blogs about sour beers and Brettanomyces) or bacteria that chews up the sugars in the beer. The byproducts of yeast are CO2 and alcohol, but bacteria produces only acid.
